Time Shift (Advance / Delay)
Time shifting involves the action of advancing or delaying a signal, described as x(t−t0), where t0 is a real constant. Figure 14 provides an example of a time shift.
If t0 > 0, an advance occurs: a horizontal translation of t0 towards the left.
If t0 < 0, a delay occurs: a horizontal translation of t0 towards the right.
Graphically, the leading signal x(t+t0) or delayed signal x(t-t0) corresponds to the horizontally translated version of the original signal x(t).
