What are the basic tools for spectral analysis?

Without a doubt, the Fourier transform is a fundamental tool...! However, there are many other linear, and particularly orthogonal, transforms.

Why do we refer to them as linear and orthogonal transforms? (See course cited at [12]).

Nevertheless:

1. The Fourier integral has several limitations, requiring knowledge of the entire signal history, it can also diverge (be non-summable).

2. Informative signals typically exhibit random characteristics, making them unsuitable for representation by random models.
