Course description :
Fortran is a very common compiled language in the scientific computing field and it must be mastered by anyone confronted with computer numerical simulation. This course introduces the student to the science of computations. Algorithms for standard problems in computational science are presented. The basics of the object-oriented programming language Fortran are taught to facilitate the student’s implementation of algorithms.
The practical work will be held in a computer laboratory, where the students will get real-time hands-on experience of the methods and techniques described in class.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, the students will be able to
- identify the components of scientific computing;
- identify standard problems in scientific computing;
- implement basic algorithms for standard problems in computational science using the programming language Fortran 90;
- write, debug, and verify computer codes;
- output results of computer simulations in a meaningful manner
